Things to Know

The only ATM and bank on the island is in Moyogalpa and it accepts visa cards only.  When you take the ferry to the island and think you may be low of cash,  it would be wise to stop in Moyogalpa and go to the only bank, Banpro (situated on the main road, 300 m. up from the dock on the right hand side) in order to be sure you have enough money to enjoy the island.

If you plan to hike the volcano, or any of the trails, it is advisable that you bring comfortable hiking boots.

The island has no streetlights so a flashlight is invaluable if you plan to go out after dark (6pm).

Other useful items so your adventure can be more comfortable, may include insect repellent, sunscreen, and a rain coat.

Traveling from Costa Rica, or plan to come late in the day?  Please inform us.

In general Nicaragua is a safe country.  With that said, sometimes people are lead into a false sense of security.  Please be as careful as you would be at home, and do not allow yourself to get into a bad situation.  Please remember to:  lock your hotel room, do not walk alone at night,  safe gaurd your valuables, take only registered taxis/public transportation and do not accept rides from strangers.  We hope that you enjoy your holiday in Nicaragua, the charm of the people, the lull of the volcanoes, lakes and seas!  Let the big adventure begin!!!
