THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS
We wanted to create something comfortable,
where people would want to spend their time relaxing, enjoying a sunset or a good book.
We wanted to create something comfortable,
where people would want to spend their time relaxing, enjoying a sunset or a good book.
We have been building on our property on and off since 2004. The first two years we just tried to build
our house and tried to learn how to get materials and what worked here. There
is a huge learning curve to anyone wanting something comfortable in a tropical
jungle where the birds sing each morning.
The cabins are made with mixed techniques that maximize the use of natural material like adobe for the walls and floors, wood and palm leaves for the thatched roofs. Creating a cosy and comfortable atmosphere in harmony with the environment. They are wonderful retreat for anyone wanting to spend time in nature, enjoying the beauty that surrounds us.
We used mainly adobe, a natural earthly mix of clay, sand and natural fibre for the walls. This allowed us to use material mainly found on our site, therefore eliminating almost completely the need for big, polluting and smoke spitting trucks and minimizing the environmental impact.
To achieve a greater heat insulation from the tropical sun we inserted a layer of Styrofoam, which keeps the walls fresh and cool even after hours of sunshine. The whole structure was then coated with a thin layer of cement stucco to protect the adobe walls from the tropical rains.
The floor in El Sol, and outside patio ofLa Luna is made from stone that
was taken from the volcano Maderas near Trichana.
The floor inLa Luna
is poured adobe, comprised of 3 different layers on a gravel base for
drainage. The finish coat on the adobe
floor is mixed with a red okra in order to give it a deeper colour and then
sealed with linseed oil and bees wax.
The thatch roofs on both cabins are made from royal palm leaves. There are over 1000 leaves per roof. The leaves were cut by climbing the palm trees and chopping the leaves with a machete and caring them by hand to a place where the truck could go. The leaves were then dried in the sun, and woven on the cabins.
Wood frames, doors and windows were carved out via chainsaw and then worked up and beautified. The wood came from our property, as well as bought from local people and carried by hand to our property. The doors and windows are made from Mango wood as there is an abundance on the island.
